We invest like owners, because that is what we are.
We invest where we can add more than money.
East Africa has capital. What it more often lacks is governance, operating discipline and the patience to build something over a decade. That is what we bring, and it is why we prefer positions where we can take an operating or board role.
We stay in sectors we understand.
Hospitality, real estate, education and healthcare are not a diversification strategy — they are the four things we have run ourselves. When we look outside them, into emerging technology, we look for businesses solving infrastructure problems in markets we already operate in.
We take the long view.
We are not structured around a fund life. We can hold an asset for fifteen years if fifteen years is what it takes, and that changes which opportunities are available to us.
We underwrite the downside first.
In frontier and emerging markets the upside case writes itself. We spend our diligence on title, regulation, currency, counterparty and the question of who actually runs it on a Tuesday morning.
We do not invest where we cannot get on a plane.
Every market we hold assets in is one where we have people.
